Absprungrate

The bounce rate (German: Absprungrate) is an important metric in web analytics and describes the percentage of visitors who leave a website after viewing only a single page without interacting with any further content. It provides insight into how well a page retains users and whether it motivates them to continue reading or take the desired action.

A high bounce rate can – depending on the context – indicate that the content does not meet expectations, the user navigation is unclear, or the loading time was too long. In some cases, however, a high bounce rate is not to be considered negative, for example, when users specifically search for certain information, find it immediately, and then leave the page satisfied.

Example: A visitor lands on a Google result on a blog article, reads the entire post, but then leaves the site without visiting any other subpages. Although the content has fulfilled its purpose, this visit is counted as a bounce in the statistics.

An advantage of analyzing the bounce rate lies in identifying optimization potentials early. Pages with particularly high rates should be reviewed in terms of content relevance, design, loading speed, and call-to-actions. Small adjustments – such as internal linking or clearer calls to action – can often significantly improve the dwell time and interaction.

In combination with other metrics such as dwell time, scroll depth, or conversion rate, the bounce rate provides valuable insights into the user experience and content quality. For website operators, SEOs, and marketers, it is therefore a key indicator within a data-driven optimization strategy.
